Ativan is the brand name for lorazepam, a prescription medication in the benzodiazepine drug class. It’s primarily used to treat anxiety disorders, but it can also help with insomnia, seizures, muscle spasms, and sedation before medical procedures.

How It Works

Ativan enhances the activity of GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid), a neurotransmitter that calms nerve activity in the brain. This produces a relaxing, sedative effect.
